Raimund Miller has specialised in the field of structural design and design management since graduating from the University of Pretoria in 1979. As an "engineer in training" with Keeve Steyn and Partners, Raimund was involved in the structural design and drawing preparation of sewage works, rail and road bridges and water retaining structures. He was also an assistant resident engineer on the SA Transport Services, Sentrarand marshalling yard for 18 months. His site supervision included contracts for a sewage works, a reservoir, pipelines, structural steel workshops, architectural buildings, roads and services.

In 1984, whilst working for Steffen Robertson and Kirsten, Raimund registered as a professional engineer. At SRK he was involved in the design of earthworks platforms and industrial concrete structures for the Rietvlei Facebrick Factory, earth and concrete dams, canals, pipelines and water retaining structures for the Storm and Dirty Water Control System at Kendal Power Station and the 30m high Tours Earth Dam. He also conducted a research project entitled "Water pollution at the Vaal Barrage due to the mine dumps on the Reef".

With Strydom Newmark and Anthony in 1985 and 1986, Raimund designed various bridges, including a 150m long six span bridge at Pan Interchange. As an Associate with BKS Incorporated from 1986 to 1993, Raimund was involved in the design, drawing preparation, documentation, client liaison, site inspections and organization of staff on numerous structural projects, including:

  • Bridges - Reinforced and prestressed concrete, precast beam, incrementally launched, structural steel, widening and raising, labour intensive construction and rehabilitation.

  • Road related structures - culverts, various earth retaining systems, toll plazas, sign gantries, road barriers, light masts and canals.

  • Multi-storey architectural buildings.

  • Industrial steel and concrete structures.

  • Water retaining structures - reservoirs, sewage works and water purification works.

In March 1993 Raimund formed the consulting practice ARQ Associates (now ARQ (Pty) Ltd together with Alan Parrock and Quentin Shaw and runs the structural arm of the company. At ARQ Raimund has been involved in the design of numerous founding and earth retaining structures, multi-storey buildings, bridges, large steel structures for process plants, industrial structures and water retaining structures. He has also designed and managed several bridge rehabilitation projects. Raimund has a strong interest in the integration of computer spreadsheets with CAD for the automation of design/drawing functions. With the assistance of his wife Karin, a graphic designer, he further enjoys promoting the use of computer graphics to enhance otherwise sterile civil engineering drawings and reports. Raimund has 40 years’ post graduate experience approximately 70% of which was related to bridges.
